Incredible Internet

As you can see, I have re-modeled by blog page again. It has to go with times. Cannot be Chinese New Year design when Valentine's Day is here, though technically Chinese New Year celebration is not over until Chap Goh Mei, an extension of 2 weeks and Chinese version of Valentine's Day. Instead of buying chocolates, cards, lingerie and whatnot, the young ladies will be throwing oranges into the river and making a wish for a good husband.

There is a Buddhist saying that "the key to open the gates of heaven is the same key that opens the gates of hell". So, for instance, when the internet is used for unholy purposes such as circulating porn images of celebrities, all hell will break lose. Keywords such as "Edison Chen, Gillian Chung, Cecilia Cheung, Maggie Q, Mandy Chen, Yu Ju, Vincy Yeung, Jolin Tsai, Rachel Ngan, Candice Chen or sex scandal" will return "unflattering" search results. And with a bit of skill and patience, you can very easily retrieve the information you needed.

Such is the power of internet. It is revolutionizing our lives to a different level, an effect labeled as world-flattening by the author, Thomas Friedman. There is so much information out there and you just need to look for the good ones. That's why it is called the information age.

If you spend enough time surfing and exploring, you find a lot a free stuffs given away by generous people. I have used some of the stuff to develop my template and credit should be given to these people:

Cow's Blog
Feed Icons
Cool Text
userscripts.org
.NET Butchering
Beta Blogger for Dummies
Dyers.org
netzgesta.de

and still others that I might have missed out. You guys are great!

On the other hand, I learned the hard way that not everything you find on the internet is good. Personally, I won't recommend you to use Haloscan - a post-comments managing system. It wrecks your original HTML code. Fortunately, I had a back-up copy and managed to manually edit back to the original code.

I am still on the learning curve and I like to use blogspot because I learn how the how thing works. On the other hand, it is probably sensible to migrate to your own domain server eventually and use other blogging platforms e.g. Wordpress.

The internet is truly incredible. Right now, if I want to listen to music, I can just go to imeem website and listen to any song. If I want to buy stuff, I go to amazon and other sites. If I want to call someone, I can skype. The big thing now is social networking. Some say the social network, Facebook, may become bigger than Google in future.

When you use the internet well, it can open the gates of heaven for you.

Huh, really?

Warning: Virus attack!

Darn it, I received an email from somebody with an attachment file called "happynewyear2008.exe" and unsuspectingly clicked to open and run it. Sensing something amiss, I immediately googled for information about this file and realized it is a variant of some past virus files. So, please if you received anything like this from me or anyone, do not open or run it. As usual, always let your anti-virus program run to protect you from malicious attacks.

I am going to use the free trial version of anti-virus program from Kapersky to fix it.

Sigh....after I got attacked, now my desktop gets attacked.

If you think you are infected, you may want to get a free online antivirus scan from one or two of these:

Fark, now my cough also getting worse. Need to get my "Pei Pa Koa"

Sound advice for newbies blogging for traffic

Recently, I read about a blogger making $72 just over the weekend from her Barbie doll blog in the Internet Marketing Singapore forum. Now, that is a lot of $$$ to newbies like me. Why is it not happening here.....boo hooo...? I welcome any good comments and advice from you....you can pick your answers in the poll survey. boohoohoo....

Anyway, I came across very good advices offered to a blogger in this forum.

Let me summarize the information in the post here in case you are unable to access it.

1. A steady stream of quality content

  • preferably daily
  • if you blog infrequently, your readers will visit infrequently
  • consistent blogging helps in getting a good standing for the search engine, particularly in the beginning
2. Your blog lacks focus when.....
  • you cover too many issues, e.g. such as ranging about yourself to Yahoo music to internet marketing to programming to investment.
(Most readers are busy people looking for specific information and may not bother going through your blog. If you need to blog whatever you are thinking about, get a separate blog to serve that purpose. But create another blog with focus topic that will become your income generator.)

3. Choose your topic carefully
  • Some topics are over-saturated already. Many serious competition in areas such as comments on Google Ad, payperpost, affiliate etc.
  • Offer value for money in your blog, otherwise, your blog will lose out to other more reputable and strong blogs.
  • For example, a good topic may be about 'lawnmowers' vs 'gadgets'
4. Make use of your strength
  • For example, you may be good at software programming and thus can provide useful tips and information written at the targeted audiences' level of understanding and meeting their needs.
  • Sometimes, objectivity in a particular topic is more welcoming than personal view-oriented writing style.
  • You can use forums to understand your targeted audiences' needs.
5. Setting up your blog properly
  • installing useful widgets such as RSS, feedburner, technorati, site meter etc.
  • get better acquainted with keyword optimization, keyword popularity, aggregators, technorati, blogexplosion, weblogs.com, blogrolling, link exchanges, trackback, blogrolls....these are just some of the things to do to increase traffic.
  • Use Google Analytics and site meter to monitor your traffic and fine tune your traffic generation.

Digg....Delicious....Technorati....Furl.....Say what?

For newbies, the number of icons that you see at various places on blogs or forums can be mind-boggling. You know, those tiny little logo buttons that look like this.

blinkbits BlinkList blogmarks co.mments connotea del.icio.us De.lirio.us digg Fark feedmelinks Furl LinkaGoGo Ma.gnolia NewsVine Netvouz RawSugar Reddit scuttle Shadows Simpy Smarking Spurl TailRank Wists YahooMyWeb

These icons link to social bookmarking sites where readers can share and discover new web pages. Here's some of them and what they say about themselves.

digg

"Digg is a place for people to discover and share content from anywhere on the web. From the biggest online destinations to the most obscure blog, Digg surfaces the best stuff as voted on by our users. You won’t find editors at Digg — we’re here to provide a place where people can collectively determine the value of content and we’re changing the way people consume information online.

How do we do this? Everything on Digg — from news to videos to images to Podcasts — is submitted by our community (that would be you). Once something is submitted, other people see it and Digg what they like best. If your submission rocks and receives enough Diggs, it is promoted to the front page for the millions of our visitors to see.

And it doesn’t stop there. Because Digg is all about sharing and discovery, there’s a conversation that happens around the content. We’re here to promote that conversation and provide tools for our community to discuss the topics that they’re passionate about. By looking at information through the lens of the collective community on Digg, you’ll always find something interesting and unique. We’re committed to giving every piece of content on the web an equal shot at being the next big thing."

del.icio.us
"del.icio.us is a social bookmarking website, which means it is designed to allow you to store and share bookmarks on the web, instead of inside your browser. This has several advantages.

First, you can get to your bookmarks from anywhere, no matter whether you're at home, at work, in a library, or on a friend's computer.

Second, you can share your bookmarks publicly, so your friends, coworkers, and other people can view them for reference, amusement, collaboration, or anything else. (Note that you can also mark bookmarks on del.icio.us as private -- only viewable by you -- if you like.)

Third, you can find other people on del.icio.us who have interesting bookmarks and add their links to your own collection. Everyone on del.icio.us chooses to save their bookmarks for a reason. You have access to the links that everyone wants to remember. You can see whether two people have chosen to remember a link, or whether it was useful enough for a thousand people to remember -- which may help you find things that are useful for you, too."

Technorati
"Currently tracking 112.8 million blogs and over 250 million pieces of tagged social media.

Technorati is the recognized authority on what's happening on the World Live Web, right now. The Live Web is the dynamic and always-updating portion of the Web. We search, surface, and organize blogs and the other forms of independent, user-generated content (photos, videos, voting, etc.) increasingly referred to as “citizen media.”

But it all started with blogs. A blog, or weblog, is a regularly updated journal published on the web. Some blogs are intended for a small audience; others vie for readership with national newspapers. Blogs are influential, personal, or both, and they reflect as many topics and opinions as there are people writing them.

Blogs are powerful because they allow millions of people to easily publish and share their ideas, and millions more to read and respond. They engage the writer and reader in an open conversation, and are shifting the Internet paradigm as we know it.

On the World Live Web, bloggers frequently link to and comment on other blogs, creating the type of immediate connection one would have in a conversation. Technorati tracks these links, and thus the relative relevance of blogs, photos, videos etc. We rapidly index tens of thousands of updates every hour, and so we monitor these live communities and the conversations they foster.

The World Live Web is incredibly active, and according to Technorati data, there are over 175,000 new blogs (that’s just blogs) every day. Bloggers update their blogs regularly to the tune of over 1.6 million posts per day, or over 18 updates a second.

Technorati. Who's saying what. Right now."

furl
"Furl is a free service that saves the important items you find on the Web and enables you to quickly find them again. Furl archives a personal copy of every page you save. When you want to recall it, you can find it instantly by searching the full text your archived items. Each member has a personal archive of 5 gigabytes (GB), large enough to store tens of thousands of searchable items.

Furl recommends new Web pages that may interest you, guided by the sites you've already 'Furled,' or saved.

Furl also offers the best ways to share the content you find on the Web. Send a daily email newsletter of links to friends and colleagues, use Furl to generate RSS feeds for your links, or integrate them quickly and easily into an existing Web site.

Furl was founded in the spring of 2003 by Mike Giles, and is part of the LookSmart family."

reddit
"reddit is a source for what's new and popular on the web -- personalized for you. Your votes train a filter, so let reddit know what you liked and disliked, because you'll begin to be recommended links filtered to your tastes. All of the content on reddit is submitted and voted on by users like you."

Which design is better?

And the verdict is 3 (60%) to 2 (40%). 3 persons voted, not bad, hahaha. So I will stick to 3 column since it will give me more real estate for my ad campaign, hahaha.

New 3-column look!

What do you think? Is the 2-column or 3-column look better? 3-column seems cluttered but am able to squeeze in more stuff in the page area. Anyway, took me a while to get this done, thanks to Vin's site . Just going to experiment this for a while and maybe revert to the old look if I don't like it anymore. How about a poll? Make your selection right the top of this page.
